How to Install Docking Drawer Outlets into Shallow Drawers With Minimal HeightUpdated a day ago

When working with drawer boxes that are less than the standard 3" in height, we recommend applying one of the following three installation techniques:

1. Create a U-Shaped Cutout

The most popular and effective method for installing outlets in drawers with minimal height is the drop-in technique. This technique involves making a U-shaped cutout in the back wall of the drawer box, allowing the outlet to drop in seamlessly.

Steps to Create a U-Shaped Cutout:

  1. Mark the Cutout Template: Attach the appropriate outlet cutout template to the back of the drawer box where the outlet will be placed. To achieve the U-shaped cutout, ensure the cutout template's top line aligns with the drawer box's top.
  2. Cut the U-ShapeCarefully cut out the marked U-shape using a high-quality saw or cutting tool. With this technique, only three cuts will be needed, as the top edge of the drawer box is the top side of the cutout template. The cut should be clean and precise to avoid damaging the drawer box and ensure a snug fit for the outlet.
  3. Install the OutletDrop the outlet into the U-shaped cutout. Ensure that it fits securely and sits flush with the back wall of the drawer box.

*The quality of materials is an important consideration when applying this technique. When employing the U-shaped cutout method, the drawer box must be constructed from high-quality material to ensure the structure remains solid and stable even after the cutout.

2. Route Out the Bottom of the Drawer Box

If the drawer box is shallower than the standard 3" minimum, and you're seeking to install the outlet as low as possible in the drawer box, you can use a router to remove material on the bottom of the drawer box to allow space for the outlet'scover plate.

3. Create a Taller Drawer Box Back Wall

In another popular method, the height of the back wall of the drawer can be increased by creating a taller back wall in the drawer box to accommodate the Blade Series receptacle box.
