Installation Techniques for Minimal Height DrawersUpdated 10 days ago

When working with drawer boxes that are less than the standard 3" in height, we recommend applying one of the following three installation techniques:

This is the most popular technique for installing outlets into shallow drawers. It involves making a U-shaped cutout in the back wall of the drawer box, allowing the outlet to drop in seamlessly. How it's done:

  1. Attach the provided cutout template to the back of the drawer box, aligning the top line with the top of the box.

  2. Carefully cut out the marked U-shape using a quality saw or cutting tool. Only three cuts are needed, using the top edge of the drawer as the template’s top side.

  3. Drop the outlet into the cutout, ensuring a snug, flush fit.

Note: Only use this method with solid, high-quality drawer materials to maintain structural strength after cutting.

2. Route Out the Bottom of the Drawer Box

If you want to install the outlet as low as possible in a shallow drawer, use a router to remove material from the bottom of the drawer box. This creates space for the outlet’s cover plate to fit below the drawer’s back edge.

3. Create a Taller Drawer Box Back Wall

Another effective approach is to increase the height of the drawer’s back wall. This modification allows the Blade Series receptacle box to fit, even in drawers with minimal overall height.

Remember:

  • Always consider the material quality of your drawer box before beginning any modifications.

  • Optimal Drawer Height: For the best results, we recommend a minimum interior drawer box height of 3 inches. This height provides ample space for the outlet installation while maintaining the structural integrity of the drawer.

  • Acceptable Range: Drawers with interior heights between 2.5 inches and 3 inches can accommodate the outlet installation, provided the drawer is constructed from high-quality, solid materials.

  • Caution Below 2.5 Inches: Installing outlets in drawers with interior heights below 2.5 inches is technically possible but not ideal. Considerations include:

    • Structural Integrity: Thinner drawer materials may compromise the strength and durability of the drawer, especially after modifications.

    • Mounting Challenges: Reduced material thickness can affect the secure mounting of the outlet, as there may be insufficient material to anchor screws or hardware effectively.

    • Cover Plate Clearance: In very shallow drawers, the outlet’s cover plate may protrude above the back wall, potentially interfering with the drawer’s operation or aesthetics.

    • Device Compatibility: Ensure the drawer’s depth accommodates the intended devices. Super shallow drawers may not provide sufficient space for certain items, even if the outlet fits.
